BARKitecture is an architectural competition where top designers & builders are challenged to build fun, funky and functional ABODE's for our animal friends. On Display at The Home Show, Feb. 4-7, Century II.

Design Guidelines

Let your imagination run wild and your creativity explode. This is a DESIGN competion after all, but most importantly make sure your structure is safe and funcitonal for our animal friends. Your donation will be auctioned to the highest bidder the evening of the BARKitecture Bash & Meow Mixer. Your BARKitecture structure can be big or small, made for indoors or out, themed, or made for a specific purpose or animal...all should be unique and creative. Remember, don't limit yourself to man's best friend. PLUS, THIS YEAR WE'VE EXPANDED THE COMPETITION TO INCLUDE FURNITURE AND ART WITH AN ANIMAL FLAIR!

We will accept almost any structure as long as it follows the guidelines listed below.

  • ENTRY DEADLING PUSHED BACK....STILL TIME TO ENTER. . All sponsors receive 1 entry with their sponsorship.
  • All animal abodes must reflect the Kansas Humane Society’s mission that every companion animal has a safe, loving home and responsible owner. Companion animals include dogs, cats, guinea pigs, ferrets, bunnies, hamsters, gerbils, rats and birds. Please contact us if you’d like to design an abode for an animal that isn’t on this list.
  • All entries must be functional, durable and designed for either indoor or outdoor use.
  • No materials may be used that are toxic or otherwise harmful to animals. The use of sustainable, recylable, or reclaimed materials is highly encouraged. Please contact us if you need more information.
  • All abodes must be usable by a pet. Maximum outdoor animal abode dimensions are 48” x 48” x 48”. There is no minimum size. If building furniture or other item that doesn't fit this size - please contact Dana Steffee at (316) 220-8707 or e-mail dsteffee@kshumane.org
  • All outdoor abodes must have accompanying base of ¾” plywood. All structures must stand up to transportation.
  • Finished abodes must be delivered to Abode Home, 1330 E. Douglas, by noon Wednesday, January 20, 2010.
  • The Kansas Humane Society, Abode Home, and WABA Home Builders Care reserves the right to refuse any entry for any reason. All entries the sole property of the Kansas Humane Society. The Kansas Humane Society is not responsible for any late, lost, delayed, or damaged entries.
